Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yoga is often called the yoga of awareness or transformation. It is a comprehensive technology used to awaken Kundalini, expand our awareness, to unite the finite with Infinity, to merge the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness. Kundalini Yoga is a science and not a religion, although the origins are generally considered a part of the Hindu philosophy and teachings as with all other forms of traditional ancient yogic practice.
Kundalini Yoga is a spiritual meditative practice which harnesses the mental, physical, and nervous energies of our body to expand awareness and experience a higher consciousness and merging of the soul and our creator through the awakening of Kundalini. Kundalini Yoga is the path of discovery of the source of prana, or life force energy in us as it is called in the yogic system, and how to use it in positive ways to transform our everyday lives with bringing balance to the body, mind, and soul. Kundalini Yoga technology precisely and consciously uses kriyas, a combination of conscious breathing, mudra, eye-focus, mantra, body locks, and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, and purify the blood to bring about this transformational change and greater levels of spiritual awareness and connection to God.
This meditative practice is designed to "awaken Kundalini", or Shakti, the feminine infinite power of Consciousness that creates the entire universe and all that is in it. Once activated from her resting place near the base of the spine (muladhara Charkra), the awakened Kundalini begins her work of transforming and purifying the subtle body and the physical body with movement through the seven chakras.
Just as our physical body has conduits for vital fluids and nerve impulses, the subtle body (nonphysical energy) centers of consciousness, called chakras, have conduits for the flow of energy of consciousness called nadis. Prana is the energy that flows through the subtle body, and prana is produced by Kundalini, and Kundalini flows through the main conduit called the sushumna nadi, which runs from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Kundalini meditation awakens the conscious mind to the presence of the seven chakras, energy centers, along the sushumna nadi; and with focus on these energy centers, we increase the flow of this healing Kundalini energy which becomes a vehicle for transformation in our body, mind, and spirit.
Kundalini is a power, a presence, an illumination that lies beyond human religious thought. Kundalini gives us the gift of knowing who we truly are, through complete union of the self with the Divine, or universal consciousness, or Christ Consciousness.
Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan is founded on the principles of Sikh Dharma, built on the three pillars of Patanjali’s kriya yoga system, which include discipline, spiritual study, and devotion to God. Yoga Bhajan spent many years in India learning, mastering, and perfecting the habits and practices of Kundalini Yoga before introducing it to the West in 1968. In 1969 he founded the 3HO Foundation, which under his guidance expanded to more than 300 centers worldwide in 35 countries. The 3HO (Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization) is a vibrant, dynamic community of leaders, teachers, students, and seekers of various faiths and cultures.
In addition to the practice of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan’s teachings include a comprehensive lifestyle designed to support us through the daily challenges and stresses of work, family, business, and relationships. Through spiritual transformation, Yogi Bhajan believed that everyone can live healthy, happy and holy; bountiful, blissful and beautiful; as a whole, healed human being.
